In Out of Office: Milton Sonday, Auxier Kline presents five never before seen collages that directly relate to Sonday’s career as one of the preeminent experts in the field of textile studies. In this series, Sonday weaved covers of Harlequin romance novels, vintage gay pornography, and magazine advertisements, creating images that feel like fever dreams or scrambled screens of desire and commerce.  These collages draw directly from Sonday’s structures and patterns for weaving to create complicated and completely original imagery from found vintage print media.

Milton Sonday worked as a curator at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum from 1977 – 2001.  In 2012, he donated his research archive to the Antonio Ratti Textile Center at The Met, where in 2019, the museum exhibited the solo exhibition, The Secret Life of Textiles: The Milton Sonday Archive.
